Baldwin Village Real Estate

Travel the world of dining between two stop signs! Since the first café opened in 1978, Baldwin Village has emerged as one of Toronto’s best-known restaurant districts.

This tiny commercial enclave at the heart of downtown Toronto is a cheerful mix of some 38 Victorian residences converted to small family-run shops and popular restaurants — with cuisines from Italy, France, China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, India and the Mediterranean. Add vegetarian dining, and Baldwin Street between Beverley and McCaul Streets is a smorgasbord of international tastes.

The street takes its name from early 19th-century landowner, William Baldwin, and has a long history as a cultural and lifestyle mosaic. In the 1920s it was a predominately Jewish neighbourhood, an offshoot of the nearby Kensington Market community. By the 1960s and 70s, it had become a haven for hippies and young Americans opposed to the Vietnam War. In the 1980s, it was largely an extension of Chinatown. Today, it is a close-knit eclectic community, fiercely proud of its diversity.

With the Ontario College of Art & Design, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the University of Toronto campus at its doorstep, the neighbourhood has a distinctly artistic and scholastic ambience.
