Garden District Homes for sale & Real Estate Toronto

In 2001, the area north from Queen Street to Carleton Street and east from Yonge Street to Sherbourne Street received official designation as a Toronto District. The Residents Association subsequently chose the name Garden District, honouring one of the jewels of downtown green space — Allan Gardens Park and botanical Conservatory, founded in 1858, close to the Jarvis/Carlton intersection.
The Garden District also takes in part of the city’s Gay Village, a portion of Moss Park neighbourhood, and heritage sites such as the Merchandise Building and Mackenzie House Museum.
The District developed as two distinct sections, divided north-south by Jarvis Street. The section west to Yonge Street was subdivided in 1834, at the time of Toronto’ incorporation as a City. The area takes in landmark institutions such as St. Michael’s Cathedral, St. Michael’s Choir School, and St. Michael’s Hospital (St. Mike’s, to Torontonians)... as well as entertainment ikons such as Massey Hall, Maple Leaf Gardens, the Elgin, Wintergarden and Canon theatres, and the Ryerson Model School (part of Ryerson University).
The section from Jarvis Street east to Sherbourne was subdivided in the 1850s, using the original Town of York north-south grid for the streets. This is a primarily residential area. Originally a very exclusive district, land values have been slowly depressed over time, influenced by poorer surrounding neighbourhoods.
Garden District homes are an eclectic mix of classic, renovated Victorian houses, Edwardian-style row houses, apartment co-ops, subsidized housing, hostels, shelters, and million-dollar condominiums.
