Trinity Bellwoods Homes for sale and Real Estate Toronto
For many decades, Queen Street West was known as the home of the artistic community that dwelt in Toronto. This trend however began to change in the 1980's. At that time, a local TV station bought the 299 Queen West building then ornately decorated and thus the area started to get trendy. This, in turn, came with much higher rents in the area and many of the artists were driven out because of the high cost of living. Before 1981, gentrification was almost non-existent and one could still find a good assortment of book stores that were lined with other kinds of funky stores. Lots of artwork filled these stores, both outside and inside and it truly reflected the then arts community.
Today, the street is very popular, but for different reasons with the moving of the artists and store owners. With few book stores, most of them have moved to nearby neighborhoods. Most of them can still be found near the Spadina and Harbord intersection, near the University of Toronto. Queen Street West between Spadina and the University of Toronto had its fame in the 1970s. With the moving of the artists to the Queen Street West of Spadina, this area has now regained the same fame as the former gentrified region. Here, art storefronts have again become popular. The main streets that are popular include the Augusta Avenue and the Denison Avenue where most of the artists are able to open up their stores and continue with business. Other neighborhoods surrounding the Queen Street West area include the Liberty Village and the Beaconsfield Village. These neighborhoods have Victorian style homes and offer Queen Street West residents shopping destinations as well as recreation.
