Birch Cliff Homes & Real Estate Toronto
A little over 100 years ago, Birch Cliff was cottage country — an idyllic getaway for affluent Torontonians, drawn by the raw beauty of the bluffs along the lake shore. Today, this is an established, family-oriented neighbourhood — one of Toronto’s most charming districts, and still a place to get away from the bustle of the city.
The first development in the area came in 1895, when the Toronto Hunt Club located here — prompting the construction of summer cottages on adjacent land. One of the early cottagers, John Stark, called his cottage Birch Cliff for the trees that lined his lakeside property, and the name stuck — adopted by the local post office that opened in 1907 in Arthur Mitchell's grocery store, at the corner of Kingston Road and Birchmount Avenue.
Development as a year ‘round residential community began soon after, and continued through the 1950s. The resulting housing stock is a mixture of styles... including bungalows, storey-and-a-half houses and detached two-storey homes, featuring Tudor, Edwardian and Cape Cod designs. There are also homes from the 1980s and 90s, and the northern end of the district offers infill townhouses and condo developments.
Two distinct residential pockets are located within the greater Birch Cliff area: Birch Cliff Heights, situated on the north side of Kingston Road, between Birchmount and Kennedy Roads... and the much sought-after Fallingbrook district, west of the Toronto Hunt Club to the south of Kingston Road.
Fallingbrook district is known for its lush ravine topography, winding streets and splendid manor houses overlooking the lake, with many homes adjacent to the picturesque grounds of the Toronto Hunt Club. (Units in a new eco-friendly loft proposed for Fallingbrook Road sold recently for between $300,000 and $1 million.)
For home buyers and investors, the farther north of Kingston and east of Kennedy, the friendlier the prices.
