The Upper Beaches neighborhood is located directly north of the Beaches area, reaching from Coxwell Avenue in the west to Victoria Park Avenue in the east, and from Kingston Road northwards to the CN tracks between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street. The neighborhood also takes in buildings along and north of Danforth Avenue.

“Upper Beaches” is a name coined fairly recently for the neighbourhood. The original settlement, Norway, took its name from the Norway pines that forested the region and provided the main industry for the early 1840s community. Before there was any development along Toronto's Beaches, Norway was a postal village and a stagecoach stop along Kingston Road, the main route connecting Toronto with Kingston, Ontario.

Throughout its history, the neighborhood has been home to a primarily working class population, with Upper Beaches real estate and homes generally priced considerably below those in The Beaches to the south. However, through 2008-2009, there has been a significant rise in prices, and the neighbourhood’s demographics now reflect a healthy mix of lower, middle and upper-scale earners, and an eclectic mix of recent immigrants.

Upper Beaches homes reflect a variety of eras, styles and types — from apartment buildings to brick single dwellings to housing developments located on formerly industrial lands along the rail line.
