Bedford Park Homes and Real Estate Toronto

Bedford Homes & Real Estate Toronto

The first settlement in what is now the Bedford Park neighbourhood was a tiny hamlet at the muddy crossroads of Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue — a welcome stop for horsemen and wagons traveling to and from the Toronto markets. The name probably derived later from the Bedford Park hotel, which opened on the south west corner of Yonge and Fairlawn Avenue in 1873.

The hamlet grew into a village, but broad residential development of Bedford Park began when Metropolitan Street Railway opened service to the area in 1890 — the year Bedford Park amalgamated with the former Town of North Toronto, subsequently annexed by the city of Toronto in 1912. To this day, the neighbourhood is still commonly referred to as North Toronto.

The irregularly shaped neighbourhood is bordered by Lawrence Avenue in the south, Brooke Avenue in the north, Avenue Road to the west and Snowdon Avenue in the east. It is an area of quiet streets, mature shade trees, good schools, and numerous parks, parkettes and playgrounds — with close proximity to Highway 401 and Lawrence subway station.

Bedford Park homes are predominately semi-detached or detached dwellings, with smart recently-built townhomes among well-kept and often extensively renovated century-old homes. For those who prefer a condo lifestyle, the award winning Bedford Glen development on Sylvan Valley Way offers low-rise terraced apartments and townhouses in a private ravine setting.

The neighbourhood is well served with public recreation amenities, and the shopping in the Yonge-Lawrence Village and the Avenue Road shopping district is excellent, with a wide selection of chain stores, coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants and small retail stores.

With an average house price in the $600,000 range, Bedford Park is among the city’s top-selling neighbourhoods, and an attractive location for young professionals with families.
