Wychwood Park Homes & Real Estate Toronto
Marmaduke Matthews, visionary painter and driving force behind Wychwood Park’s transformation into an artist’s colony in the late 1800s, would no doubt appreciate recent changes to the Wychwood neighbourhood — particularly the rebirth of the 90-year-old streetcar maintenance barns near St. Clair Avenue West and Christie Street. Artscape Wychwood Barns is a multi-purpose, not-for-profit community centre, featuring office and meeting space, artists studios, a public community art gallery, a dog park, beach volleyball court and weekend farmers’ market.
The Wychwood area extends south from St. Clair to the railway track north of Dupont street, and west from Bathurst to Oakwood Avenue/Davenport Road. Wychwood Park is a small private hamlet within the larger neighbourhood.
Portuguese and Italian couples have long inhabited the neat 1910–1930s Wychwood homes, but the demographics are changing in anticipation of the completion of the St. Clair transit line in March 2010. Young professionals are moving in, purchasing homes from an older generation, as grandparents join their children in the suburbs.
Wychwood homes towards Bathurst and around Hillcrest and Wychwood parks are typically large three- to five-bedroom detached, built between 1910 and the 1930s. Farther west, medium-size post-war homes take over, with a few townhouses and new condos around Christie and Dupont. Prices remain relatively affordable, compared to nearby Roncesvalles. Un-renovated homes can still be found starting at around $500,000 on streets such as Alberta, Benson, Greensides, Oakwood and Winona.
Work on the transit line extension along St. Clair led to many of the original stores closing. However, new stores, cafés and restaurants are springing up in the wake of completed work.
In sum, the neighbourhood’s renaissance promises solid resale value for homeowners and investors.
