Nestled in the rustic splendour of the Don River Valley, centred on the intersection of Yonge Street and York Mills Road/Wilson Avenue, Hoggs Hollow is a uniquely charming neighbourhood of winding roads, crescents and private cul-de-sacs, lined with majestic trees. But, when James Hogg arrived from Scotland in 1824 and built his grist mill and whiskey distillery, this was a morass of swamp, quicksand and bog.

In 1856, Hogg’s sons subdivided their father's estate under the name "Hoggs Hollow", but the nature of the land made development difficult and few houses were built at the time. The community grew slowly during the 19th century as the land was improved by largely English, Irish and Scottish immigrants. It was not until the 1920s that the present-day neighbourhood began to develop, with growth occurring in stages, until finally completed in the 1960's.

The lengthy period of development accounts for the eclectic mixture of architectural styles — with Tudor, Colonial, Georgian and Modernist reflecting the tastes of the times. Most Hoggs Hollow homes are detached and, typically, two storey, with a scattering of luxury condominium buildings in the mix. This peaceful enclave is definitely one of the city’s elite locations, with prices ranging up to $1.5-million.

Hoggs Hollow residents are within walking distance of the shops, services, medical offices and food court of the York Mills Centre on the north-east corner of Yonge and York Mills Road — and equally close to the Yonge Street shopping district to the south, at the top of the hill, with a Loblaws Super Store and garden centre, and a broad selection of stores, professional and medical offices, restaurants and basic household services.
In the early 1970s, the Yonge Subway line replaced street car service, and present-day residents are a quick walk away from York Mills station — and 20 minutes from the downtown core.
