Baby Point Homes and Real Estate Toronto

Baby Point Homes & Real Estate TorontoBaby Point is a promontory or “point” of land, extending into a bend of the Humber River, west of Jane Street and north of Bloor. The first residents of this idyllic location were the Seneca tribe, but their village had been long abandoned when James Baby settled here in 1816.

Baby (correctly pronounced Babby), came from a prominent Quebec fur trading family but, instead of setting traps, he planted a large apple orchard around his home and no doubt dined on the plump salmon that swam in the Humber River. Years later, his enterprising descendants were bottling water from a fresh spring nearby and shipping it worldwide.

Baby was not the first European to settle the area. That claim likely goes to William Cooper, who built a mill on the Humber and gave the area its first name, Cooper’s Mills. (Saw mills, grist mills and wool mills continued to operate along the river banks until 1915.)

Baby's heirs lived at Baby Point until the government acquired the land in 1910 with the intention of building a military barracks. Those plans changed soon after, and the land was sold to developer Home Smith, who began developing a subdivision in 1912. Home Smith would later develop The Kingsway residential area across the Humber.

Baby Point today is a moneyed enclave, surrounded by ravines and parkland, with a Rosedale look and feel but lower prices and much larger lots. A set of historic stone gates at the intersection of Jane Street and Baby Point Road mark the only entrance, placing an unmistakable stamp of exclusivity on the neighbourhood.

Most Baby Point homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s. The handsome, larger Tudor and Victorian detached homes along Baby Point Road and Baby Point Crescent typically back onto the Humber Valley ravine... while smaller homes are found near the Jane Street and Baby Point Road entrance.

To the north and south of Baby Point are more accessibly priced single-family residential neighbourhoods established at about the same time as the Point.

With ample parkland, riverside hiking and biking trails and schools in walking distance, the tree-lined streets of Baby Point are among the most desirable family addresses in the city.
