Portugal Village Homes & Real Estate Toronto

Portugal Village Homes & Real Estate Toronto

Trinity-Bellwoods or Portugal Village is a colourful inner city neighbourhood, bounded on the east by Bathurst Street, on the north by College Street, on the south by Queen Street West, and by Dovercourt Road on the west. This is the heartland of Toronto's large Portuguese community, and many local Portuguese-Canadian businesses and restaurants can be found along Dundas Street West, continuing west into Little Portugal.

Trinity Bellwoods Park was the original site of Trinity College, now part of the University of Toront. Today, the restored gates at the south end of the park are all that remain. By 1900, the college and its picturesque surroundings began to attract residential development, and this was initially a mid- to upper-class neighbourhood. Later, as the original residents began moving out to the city fringes, the area's population was replaced by a burgeoning Portuguese community—attracted by affordable homes and the neighbourhood’s proximity to public transport and jobs.

Housing stock is largely comprised of the tall, narrow homes in vogue at the start of the 20th Century. Most sit on small lots with well-kept gardens, and many houses bear signature Portuguese and Brazilian flourishes in eccentric statuary and tiling. The majority are two or three storeys (and will cost up to $550,000 for a three-bedroom row house), but a few single-storey worker’s cottages can be found. The greater the distance from the park, the better the prices will be.

The area is in the process of gentrification, following in the steps of surrounding neighborhoods. Repeating the cycle of earlier history, many of the established Portuguese residents are moving to the suburbs or to more upscale areas of the city, and a younger more diverse generation is moving in. This demographic shift is reflected in changes to the commercial strip along Dundas West, with the appearance of sports bars, trendy restaurants and brunch places—a mix of renovated high design and deliberately shabby-chic.
