Roncesvalles Homes for sale & Real Estate Toronto

The Roncesvalles neighbourhood is bordered, approximately, by High Park in the west, Bloor and Dundas Streets to the north, Sorauren Avenue in the east, and Queen Street to the south. Located in walking distance of waterfront parks, Western Beaches and Boardwalk, the area is primarily residential, with tree lined streets and affordable, well preserved Edwardian and Victorian homes on deep lots. Average prices as of June 2009 were $658,857 for a detached Roncesvalles home, and $521,980 for a semi-detached/attached home.

Originally settled by British immigrants in the late 19th/early 20th century, Roncesvalles was transformed in the late 1940s by the arrival of many European newcomers—notably from Poland. Today, Roncesvalles Village shopping district, along the length of the avenue north of Queen Street, is the cultural centre of Toronto's Polish community, with foods markets, delis, and numerous inviting restaurants offering traditional cuisine—from sausages and hand-made pierogies to sauerkraut, cabbage rolls and wonderful filling borscht soups. Included in the eclectic mix are organic cafes, Thai restaurants and hip specialty shops.

East of Roncesvalles, along the CN and CP rail lines, an older industrial area is in transition, with several buildings along Sorauren converted into loft-style condominiums, and others owned by the city slated for conversion into a community centre. Nearby, the former bus garage property has been converted into the Sorauren Park.

Torontonians from other parts of the city may well envy the ready access to High Park’s 399 acres of picnic areas, gardens, animal paddocks, an outdoor theatre, sports facilities and the famous historical Grenadier Pond.

Residents of Roncesvalles homes with young families have a number of local junior and senior public schools, as well as Parkdale Collegiate Institute, West Toronto Secondary, French immersion, alternative, technical and separate schools.

Streetcar service on King, Queen, Dundas and Roncesvalles connects to the downtown subway or the Bloor-Danforth line, while drivers have quick access to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard to get them downtown in a matter of minutes.
